Hook, Line & Sinker

release cover

New Orleans is known as the “Big Easy”, which is a perfect place for former FBI agent Jennifer Blade and Dr. Steve Sanders to drop out of life – almost literally. Jennifer is legally dead and in witness protection after bringing down a major drug cartel. Steve is content to simply love Jennifer, New Orleans and life.

But this calm, laid-back life wasn’t meant to last – everything suddenly changes as sinister people open the doors to the past in an attempt to deeply cripple America.

“Bingo” Bob Somolianti steeped himself in crime and corruption before he was granted immunity and witness protection in exchange for his testimony against powerful crime syndicates. Part of Jennifer’s life since her mother and father died, Bingo walked a path of crime while Jennifer followed her desires into the FBI. Because of his past contacts with arms dealers, powerful people believe he is the key to finding an ultimate weapon needed to implement their destructive plan. Together, Jennifer, Steve and Bingo attempt to unravel this scheme while there is still time.

Steve, as a practicing psychologist, suddenly finds his understanding of life being challenged as he works with a woman who is deeply into the culture of Voodou. His resistance to this mystical practice is worn down as supernatural events begin to intervene in the challenge he, Jennifer and Bingo face.

“Hook, Line & Sinker” is the sequel novel to “Catch and Release” a top winner in Romance/Mystery International Competition at the 2012 London Book Festival; 2012 Los Angeles Book Fair ; 2012 Beach Book show; 2012 New England Book Show; and Winner Best Audiobook 2013 Paris Book Festival.

The Sequel

Several of my books received comments suggesting a sequel. Never wrote a sequel so the suggestions stirred my inner places and I decided to try. I love reading sequels as I have a bond with the characters and want to see them in different situations, but writing a sequel is a different story.

I decided to try with my novel CATCH and RELEASE, which won several awards and has a popular following, a helpful item when you expect people to know who the characters are in the book. But what about the people who don’t? I just couldn’t start a dialog between Jennifer and Steve if the reader had no clue who Jennifer and Steve were from other interactions. (If you never read CATCH and RELEASE, you can now easily identify with my quandary).  I found a sequel was similar to weaving a tapestry where you use enough old material to make the reader comfortable yet add lots of new things to make the story exciting.

I hope I wove properly, but only the reader will be able to judge. The new book will be out in October and is called “HOOK, LINE & SINKER” and is a continuing adventure of Dr. Steve Sanders and Special Agent Jennifer Blade. If you don’t know these two people and can’t wait for October to read HOOK, LINE & SINKER, then go to Amazon and pick up a copy of CATCH and RELEASE. (Click here)

Heavenly thoughts for writers

gates

A lot of communities are now known as “Gated Communities” which simply means nobody gets in unless they’re invited. As I entered one of these communities, I suddenly realized according to general religious consensus, Heaven is a “Gated Community”. The Pearly Gates keep out unwanted visitors and protect the residents from bad people. I guess St. Peter is supposed to be the “cop at the gate”. Hmmm, for what’s supposed to be a friendly place to live, it doesn’t sound so good from that perspective.

Anyhow, the reason I got into thinking about heaven was a joke a writer friend told me. Goes like this:

A writer died and was given the option of going to heaven or hell.

She decided to check out each place first. As the writer descended into the fiery pits, she saw row upon row of writers chained to their desks in a steaming sweatshop. As they worked, they were repeatedly whipped with thorny lashes.

“Oh my,” said the writer. “Let me see heaven now.”

A few moments later, as she ascended into heaven, she saw rows of writers, chained to their desks in a steaming sweatshop. As they worked, they, too, were whipped with thorny lashes.

“Wait a minute,” said the writer. “This is just as bad as hell!”

“Oh no, it’s not,” replied an unseen voice. “Here, your work gets published.”

Sad but true.

From 1946 to 1964, 76.4 million “baby boomers” are born in the United States, making up almost 40 percent of the nation’s population. Forever Yours, a mainstream fiction, reflects the story of this generation as they face the trials and uncertainties of the evolving American dream.

In 1963, James and Beth meet in college, fall in love, marry, and then traverse the following decades through various countries, tragedies, adventures, and children. Their love grows stronger until in the end, not even death can keep them apart.

Jeff becomes a writer who struggles to find his voice in a society undergoing a cultural and emotional revolution. From Vietnam through the Kennedy and MLK assassinations, his world is cast in startling and often frightening fashion. Beth is a free spirited individual who embraces the new independence of the modern woman. From her same-sex affair, the completion of her Ph.D., and the tragic death of a child, Beth continues to explore and love life.

The challenges of existence take on a larger-than-life twist through their good friend Steven “Bugs” Cramer, a talented musician who embraces the love and beauty of the world around him. Tragically, he is killed in Vietnam, yet his continuing presence in their lives demonstrates there is more to this journey than meets the eye. They lose a child at birth and yet are comforted by the supernatural presence of their friend Bugs. Ultimately, their love meets the final challenge of mortality, and even then Bugs helps them transcend this world’s limited understanding.

Writer’s Digest 2nd Draft says, “This story is full of memorable scenes, lively characters, anecdotes that make the story-world come alive, and various other elements that all highlight the work of a very talented writer.”

Catch and Release

A top winner in the Romance/mystery category at the London Book Fair, Los Angeles Book Show and Beach Book Festival. Winner of Best Audiobook at the 2014 Paris Book Festival.

A botched drug raid took her father’s life when she was seven. On her thirteenth birthday she witnessed her mother’s murder. Alone in the world, Jennifer Blade set out to even the score. At thirty-three, enmeshed in a game that knows no rules, she is about to fulfill her quest when everything unravels. Fleeing for her life, she heads to the mountains of upstate New York, where she unexpectedly finds new reason to live.

Steve Sanders, a thirty-eight-year-old psychologist with a predictable life, is on a fishing trip in the mountains. Little does he know that all vacations are not created equal.

Within 24 hours, they catch a few trout, have a passionate affair, shoot and kill a man, are involved in two gun battles, receive wounds, and end up in Miami, Florida. All this, and as Steve says, they still have 6 days of vacation left. Their relationship touches long-buried feelings in Jennifer, and shatters the mundane existence suffocating Steve.

Catch and Release, a riveting romance/suspense novel, is the story of two lives from vastly different backgrounds, drawn together by fate and a common love of the great outdoors. The crossing of Jennifer and Steve’s paths releases an explosion of love, passion, adventure, and ultimately a reason for a shared journey
