What is, is!

Listened to some people the other day as they talked about their lives.

Seemed to me they were spending a lot of time worrying about what might happen in the future, and then filled the spaces in between with being depressed about what had happened in the past.

I decided two things,

 1. I didn’t want to listen to them anymore

 2. It is a lot better if we just live with three words,  What is, is.

Can’t change the past, and sure don’t know what the future holds, but I do know that right now, what is, is. If you continue this thought, you will also realize the another truth is “This too shall pass”.

So there are now 7 words for peaceful living; “What is, is” and “This too shall pass.” This leaves me in a place where only the current moment exists and as far as I am concerned, it is good.

In my book FOREVER YOURS, a couple explores the adventure of life from college in the 60’s to retirement in the 2000’s. Of all my books, this is the one I enjoyed writing the most as it was about my generation’s journey. Take a look at Amazon to see all my books. BookCoverPreview.do

Why Write?

Having just finished the arduous task of getting a book published, I am in the place of wondering why I write.

final cover

Winston Churchill once said “Writing is an Adventure. To begin with, it is a toy and an amusement. Then it becomes a mistress, then it becomes a master, then it becomes a tyrant. The last phase is that just as you are about to be reconciled to your servitude, you kill the monster and fling him to the public.”

Anyone who has ever taken on the task of putting thought on paper can agree with that understanding. However, I would add, once you fling it to the public, then you become a drooling idiot who tries to get people to read the thing you once loved so much.

I guess writing a book is like raising a child; you always love them, they make you very happy and cause you great pain. But in the end, you wouldn’t live life without them. If you want to visit my “children” Click here. While your there tell them I love them even if I grumble a lot.

NEW BEGINNINGS

Every new year there is an abundance of thought about new beginnings. We go over the events of the last year and set goals for the new life before us. Someone once kept a log of his new years resolutions:

2009: I will not spend my money frivolously.
2010: I will pay off my bank loan promptly.

2011: I will pay off my bank loans promptly.
2012: I will begin making a strong effort to be out of debt by 2013.
2013: I will be totally out of debt by 2014.

2014: I will try to pay off the debt interest by 2015.
2015: I will try to be out of the country by 2016.

I guess we all like to think of new beginnings as a place of escaping from old problems. It is a fact that every new beginning means something has to end. Problem is, we often feel the past is so painful that the future is just too hard to visualize.

Maybe we need to be like the caterpillar. When he believes he has reached the end of life, the butterfly has just found a new beginning. Let’s resolve not to look back on what might have been and simply look forward to what will be.

Have a Happy and joy filled New Year. If you have time– check out my new book series

LOOK IT UP

When I was growing up and had a question, my parents would tell me to go look it up in the encyclopedia. I guess the point was to make me go through the effort of finding something out so I would appreciate and remember the answer. Not sure if it worked, but it was how we did things.

Today with the internet, if a kid doesn’t know something, he or she just hits a button and there’s the answer. That is really progress. However, I read  student loans are higher because it is taking more students 5 years to get through college instead of the normal 4 years. Maybe they are hitting the wrong button.

The whole internet concept has truly changed how all of us see life. Heard the other day that a teacher asked her 4th grade class where the nations capital was located. A student raised his hand and said Washington D.C.. The teacher then asked if he knew what D.C. stood for and the student confidently said Dot Com.

Maybe we need to go back to looking things up in the encyclopedia. But if you want to really use the internet, check out my books on Amazon (click here)

The Sequel

Several of my books received comments suggesting a sequel. Never wrote a sequel so the suggestions stirred my inner places and I decided to try. I love reading sequels as I have a bond with the characters and want to see them in different situations, but writing a sequel is a different story.

I decided to try with my novel CATCH and RELEASE, which won several awards and has a popular following, a helpful item when you expect people to know who the characters are in the book. But what about the people who don’t? I just couldn’t start a dialog between Jennifer and Steve if the reader had no clue who Jennifer and Steve were from other interactions. (If you never read CATCH and RELEASE, you can now easily identify with my quandary).  I found a sequel was similar to weaving a tapestry where you use enough old material to make the reader comfortable yet add lots of new things to make the story exciting.

I hope I wove properly, but only the reader will be able to judge. The new book will be out in October and is called “HOOK, LINE & SINKER” and is a continuing adventure of Dr. Steve Sanders and Special Agent Jennifer Blade. If you don’t know these two people and can’t wait for October to read HOOK, LINE & SINKER, then go to Amazon and pick up a copy of CATCH and RELEASE. (Click here)

Heavenly thoughts for writers

gates

A lot of communities are now known as “Gated Communities” which simply means nobody gets in unless they’re invited. As I entered one of these communities, I suddenly realized according to general religious consensus, Heaven is a “Gated Community”. The Pearly Gates keep out unwanted visitors and protect the residents from bad people. I guess St. Peter is supposed to be the “cop at the gate”. Hmmm, for what’s supposed to be a friendly place to live, it doesn’t sound so good from that perspective.

Anyhow, the reason I got into thinking about heaven was a joke a writer friend told me. Goes like this:

A writer died and was given the option of going to heaven or hell.

She decided to check out each place first. As the writer descended into the fiery pits, she saw row upon row of writers chained to their desks in a steaming sweatshop. As they worked, they were repeatedly whipped with thorny lashes.

“Oh my,” said the writer. “Let me see heaven now.”

A few moments later, as she ascended into heaven, she saw rows of writers, chained to their desks in a steaming sweatshop. As they worked, they, too, were whipped with thorny lashes.

“Wait a minute,” said the writer. “This is just as bad as hell!”

“Oh no, it’s not,” replied an unseen voice. “Here, your work gets published.”

Sad but true.
